OSHA Update: Higher Fines and Strict Fall Enforcement

OSHA is taking a harder line on roofing safety. Maximum penalties for willful or repeated violations have increased, meaning a single fall-protection or ladder infraction can now cost your business up to $165,514.

Inspectors are heavily targeting worksites for lack of personal fall arrest systems and improper ladder setups. They are also holding general contractors strictly accountable for the safety violations of their subcontractors. No matter who employs the worker, compliance is non-negotiable.Additionally, OSHA’s National Emphasis Program on Heat Stress means outdoor jobsites face unannounced inspections during high-heat days. Supervisors must provide documented heat illness prevention plans, mandatory water breaks, and shaded rest areas.

What to do now: Conduct a mandatory toolbox talk this week. Review fall gear, audit your subcontractors, and document your heat safety training to protect your crew and your bottom line.
